Stony Brook is an academic and medical hub. The university is the largest public campus in New York State by area, and Stony Brook University Hospital sits alongside it. Between them they bring in faculty, researchers and medical staff who fly often, and many of them are repeat customers.
Away from campus, Stony Brook has a village center designed by Ward Melville starting in 1939, with white clapboard shops around a green that feels more New England than Long Island. The Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages anchors the other end of town.
There is an LIRR station on the Port Jefferson Branch, but the airport route through Penn Station runs close to two hours before you even reach a terminal. Gary drives Stony Brook to JFK in about an hour and five minutes, door to terminal. MacArthur Airport is twenty to twenty five minutes south, and LaGuardia is about an hour.
