Rocky Point has a rural feel compared with the suburbs south of it. The Rocky Point Pine Barrens State Forest covers more than 5,200 protected acres on the old RCA Radio Central site, where the first commercial transatlantic phone call went out in 1927.
There has been no train station here since 1938, and Rocky Point sits farther north than most Suffolk hamlets, so reaching the expressway takes a few extra minutes. MacArthur Airport is about twenty five to thirty minutes south. JFK is roughly an hour and fifteen, with LaGuardia about the same. Gary picks up along Route 25A, near the school campus, and from the homes bordering the Pine Barrens.
Early pickups out of Rocky Point are the easy part of the day. The first fifteen minutes, the stretch from the neighborhood down to the LIE, is quiet and dark and moves fast. After that it is a straight run west, and a car service means you sleep instead of drive.
